Ocean Activities at La Jolla Cove

The waters surrounding the Cove are part of the 6,000 acre La Jolla Underwater Park, which includes an Ecological Reserve. This means there is ample wildlife, such as seals, barracuda, opaleye, giant sea bass, baitfish and orange garibaldi.

Where should you snorkel in the Cove?Once you are in the Cove area (north end of the park), you’ll see that there are three main spots ideal for snorkeling:

• The immediate Cove area(the rocky section just to the left)
• South of the cove(near the kelp beds)

Buoys are strategically placed to act as distance markers. This enables swimmers to know how far they are from the shore. There is a buoy at ¼ mile out and another one ½ mile out at the Cove, though most swimmers stay within a ½ mile of shore. Generally, the less experienced swimmer you are, the closer you should stay to shore.

Visit the Children’s Pool

In 1930, the Children’s Pool was created thanks to Ellen Browning Scripps and has a long rich history of seal pups, family photos, and even a short spell as a movie set! Thanks to the sea wall, there is a small area protected by waves making it the perfect place for rearing California seals and sea lions which you can see sunbathing on the sand almost all year long.

This arena was created with children and their safety in mind. Local philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps donated funds in 1931 to form the seawall you see today, which helps creates an open ocean pool with safe, serene waters.

Though initially intended for children, as locals well know, it has also become afavorite place for seals. La Jolla Cove has become so famous for the seal population that it’s even gainedmedia attention. Oftentimes the entire beach will be filled with them; especially during pupping season.

In September 2023, the City Council voted to close Point La Jolla year-round, in the hopes of protecting both wildlife and tourists alike. Point La Jolla is located between Boomer Beach and La Jolla Cove, and it’s usually covered with sea lions. In the past, tourists would climb down to get a closer look or take a photo. This area was initially declared off-limits during pupping season, but now will be closed year-round.

Limited access to the area between the Children’s Pool and La Jolla Cove will still be allowed, but the steps to Boomer Beach will be permanently closed.

The Children’s Pool offers on-site bathrooms and showers.

Parking at La Jolla Cove

The Cove can get pretty busy, especially during the summer. Here are our tips for parking at La Jolla Cove:

First, try to find street parking; but remember that certain spots are only available for 2 hours. Check all parking signs carefully to avoid a ticket.

Also remember that it gets very busy on most weekends! If you want to find street parking, try to arrive early on in the day to avoid the most crowds.

If you can’t find any street parking, try your luck in one of the paid parking garages or lots. There is a parking structure beneath the Crab Catcher restaurant and another one at the corner of Herschel and Prospect Street. There are also several restaurants and shops that offerfree parkingfor patrons.
